Canada's Federal, Regional &
Local Libraries are Threatened
Canada's strong library system is a key part of our democracy. Our public
libraries play an important role in education, literacy development, and
life-long learning in our communities.
Federal budget cuts are having far-reaching effects on Canada’s libraries.
Our libraries have been
weakened by the cancellation of the inter-library loans (ILL) program at Library
and Archives Canada (LAC) and the Community Access program (CAP).
The cuts to and closures of federal departmental libraries have put at risk the
preservation of our documentary heritage and access to our cultural heritage.
Inter-Library Loans Program
Cancellation of the LAC loan program means national library materials are no longer accessible to Canadians.
Community Access Programs
The elimination of CAP means fewer Canadians have public access to computers & high speed Internet.
Federal Library Cuts & Closures
Dozens of federal libraries are facing closure. The impact of such cuts & closures will be felt across Canada.
