Elimination of Federal Funding Threatens
Canada's Regional & Local Archives
"Archives are not esoteric resources for a small number of academic historians
or genealogists. We all depend on them to do the critical work of preserving our
social history and cultural heritage, and understanding who we are as a nation."
— Cheryl Avery and Mona Holmlund (Cuts to Archives pose big threat to shared
history)
On April 30, 2012, without consultation or notice, Library and Archives Canada
(LAC) eliminated the National Archival Development Program (NADP). The NADP was
a $1.7-million program administered by the not-for-profit Canadian Council of
Archives (CCA) and distributed to 13 archives councils to support archival
activities locally. All funds allocated through the program had to be matched
with funds or in-kind contributions from applicants.
Funding Must Be Restored
The National Archival Development Program is the sole source of funding for many
regional and local archives.
Outcry over Funding Cuts
The elimination of the NADP did not happen quietly. There has been a
groundswell of outrage & calls to revive the NADP.
